Transfer ownership
Move the workspace owner role to another admin. Atomic, irreversible, and confirmed by typing the workspace name.
Transfer ownership
The owner role is special: one per workspace, holds the billing keys, and can request workspace deletion. When the founder leaves, when the support lead changes, or when you simply want billing to live with finance, you transfer ownership.
When to transfer
- The current owner is leaving the company.
- You want billing in finance, not in support.
- You are merging two teams and consolidating accounts.
- The owner is on long leave and someone needs to authorize plan changes.
You do not need to transfer just to let someone else handle day-to-day. Admins can do almost everything except billing and ownership itself.
Prerequisites
- You must be the current owner to initiate.
- The recipient must already be an admin in the workspace.
- Light agents cannot become owner directly. Promote them to admin first via Settings → Team.
How it works
- Open Settings → Danger zone → Transfer ownership.
- Pick an admin from the dropdown.
- Type the workspace name exactly to confirm. Case sensitive.
- Click Transfer.
The role swap is atomic: at one point in time, the previous owner becomes admin and the new owner takes the seat. There is no in-between state where the workspace has zero owners or two.
The new owner gets an email confirming the transfer. The previous owner stays as admin and can keep working. If you want them removed entirely, the new owner can do that from Settings → Team.
What changes for the previous owner
- They lose access to Settings → Billing.
- They can no longer initiate workspace deletion or data export requests.
- Everything else stays the same. They keep all their conversations, articles, mentions, and integrations.
What changes for the new owner
- They gain access to billing.
- The Stripe billing portal now opens under their account. The card on file does not change automatically; the new owner can update it from the portal. See stripe-portal.
- The billing email on Stripe does update to the new owner's email by default. They can change it back in the portal if invoices should still go elsewhere.
What does not change
- Plan, seat count, billing cycle.
- Card on file (until manually changed).
- All conversations, customers, articles, integrations, and reports.
Transferring out of the org entirely
If the new owner is on a different email domain (acquisition, spinout, etc.), invite them as admin first, transfer, then remove the old owner. Two-step.
If the workspace itself needs to move under a new legal entity for billing purposes, the simpler path is often: keep the workspace, change the card on file, change the billing email. That avoids a transfer altogether. See stripe-portal.
What if the owner is unreachable?
If the current owner has left without transferring (account deleted, password lost, person no longer at the company), reach out via support-contact from a verified admin email. We will work with you to verify ownership of the workspace and reassign. This is a manual process and takes a few business days.
Common mistakes
Transferring before promoting. The recipient must be admin first. Light agent → owner is blocked.
Forgetting to update the billing email. If you want invoices to go to a finance shared inbox after the transfer, update the billing email in stripe-portal right after transferring.
Removing the previous owner before transferring. You cannot remove the owner. You have to transfer first, then remove if needed.
What to do next
- Visit stripe-portal right after transfer to confirm the billing email and card.
- Review danger-zone so the new owner knows what irreversible actions are gated to them.
- Re-share roles-permissions with the team so they know the chain of command.
